  • While mother-daughter bonding over tea parties and hairstyling may be a cherished tradition, dads can learn some skills of their own to make their daughters smile. Braiding a daughter's hair may seem daunting at first, but with the right tips and patience, any father can master basic hair styling techniques.

    Start with the Essentials

You'll need a few items to get started:

    • A wide-toothed comb to detangle knots without pulling hair

    • Rubber bands or barrettes to secure the end of the braid

    • optional: hairspray for hold, detangler spray for knotty hair

    Section the Hair Properly

The key to an even, successful braid is properly sectioning the hair into 3 equal parts.

    • Gently comb through hair to remove knots before braiding

    • Part hair down the middle then into left and right sections

    • Make sure sections are even in thickness from root to tip

    • Tie up or clip away excess hair that won't be part of the braid

    Start the Basic French Braid

French braids involve incorporating strands of hair into the braid as you go.

    • Start at the top of the head with the 3 sections

    • Cross the left section over the middle, then right over middle

    • Pick up a little hair from the side with each cross

    • Continue crossing and incorporating hair down the length of the braid

Secure the End and Add Accessories

    • Use hair ties, beads or barrettes to secure ends of braids

    • Spritz with hairspray for extra hold

    • Add hair clips, ties or ribbons for a fancier finished look

    Practice Makes Perfect

By starting with basic braids and adding new techniques over time, you'll build confidence and skills. Most importantly, you'll create treasured bonding moments - and gorgeous hairstyles - with your little girl.

I hope these tips help boost your braiding abilities and give you more ways to connect with your daughter through her hair! With dedication and patience, soon you'll be a braiding pro. Keep practicing and encouraging feedback - you've got this, dad.

Good luck and happy hair styling!
