  • Tired of waiting for your curling wand to heat up? Want curls but don't have a curling iron? A simple hair straightener could be all you need to create voluminous curls and waves.

While a traditional curling wand is ideal, using a flat iron to curl hair is surprisingly easy once you know the technique. Read on for our complete guide on how to curl hair with a straightener!

    Select The Right Straightener

Ceramic or tourmaline plates work best, as they distribute heat evenly and reduce damage. 1-inch width straighteners give tighter curls, while 1.5 inch plates create looser waves.

    Heat The Straightener

Set the temperature to a medium setting between 350°F-375°F for most hair types. Fine or colored hair requires a lower temperature around 325°F. Wiggle the straightener from side to side to ensure plates are evenly heated.

    Apply Heat Protectant

Spritz hair with a heat protectant before using any hot tool. This creates a barrier that reduces damage from the iron's high temperature.

    Clamp A Section & Twist

Holding the flat iron vertically, clamp a 1-inch section of hair halfway down. Slowly rotate your wrist while dragging the iron down the length of the hair. This twisting motion will form a spiral curl.

    Hold The Curl

Retain the shape of the curl by wrapping it around your finger until cooled. Pin curled sections together while styling the rest of your hair to avoid tangling.

    Refresh As Needed

Once your hair is completely styled, spritz with hairspray to set the curls. Refresh styles by reheating sections with the flat iron as needed.

    Tips:

    • Use a gloved hand for comfort

    • Apply more styling product for defined curls

    • Work in smaller sections for tighter curls

    • Create waves by twisting the iron less

With enough practice, a simple hair straightener can create bouncy curls and loose waves similar to a proper curling iron. Just take your time to master the twisting technique, experiment with various sizes of sections and iron temperatures, and protect your hair with heat protectant. Soon you'll have tousled, voluminous curls - without the extra curling wand!
