  • Like food and medicine, even our trusted beauty tools and devices have expiry dates. But how often do we really deep clean, inspect or replace them? From electric toothbrushes to straighteners, razors and more, we breakdown when you should be throwing common beauty devices in the bin.
  • Like food and medicine, even our trusted beauty tools and devices have expiry dates. But how often do we really deep clean, inspect or replace them? From electric toothbrushes to straighteners, razors and more, we breakdown when you should be throwing common beauty devices in the bin.

    Toothbrushes

Our mouths contain over 700 types of bacteria. If we don’t regularly change our toothbrushes, these bacteria along with food debris can quickly build up.

Manual toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months. Look for frayed bristles as a sign it's time to toss. Electric toothbrushes have a longer shelf life of around 6 months to 2 years, but their brush heads still need replacing every 3 months.

Check the bristles of your toothbrush regularly. If they appear frayed, bent out of shape or splayed, it's time to replace. American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines also recommend replacing your toothbrush after you've been sick to help prevent reinfection.

To prolong the life of both electric and manual toothbrushes, rinse thoroughly after each use and store upright in a hygienic toothbrush holder to allow air circulation.

    Hair Styling Tools

How long do hair straighteners, curling wands and hair dryers really last? Many of us use our hair styling tools daily for years on end. But over time, this can negatively impact the health of your hair.

Signs that your hair tools need replacing include frayed cords, loose handles, plates that don't align properly and inconsistent heat. Most experts recommend replacing hair straighteners and curling irons every 2-4 years. For hair dryers, expect a lifespan of 4-6 years with regular use.

To make your hot hair tools last longer, allow them to cool completely before storing and avoid rough handling that can damage the plates or alignment. Regularly remove built up product residue and clean with rubbing alcohol. Store in a safe, dry area away from water.

    Razors

Disposable razors are designed for only a few uses. But even electric and cartridge razors have a surprisingly short shelf life. Dull blades lead to irritation, bumps and cuts.

Replace cartridge razor heads every 4-6 weeks. Electric razors tend to last longer - around 1-2 years on average. However, foil and rotary shaver heads should be swapped every 12-18 months.

Proper care and cleaning extends a razor's lifespan. Rinse away shaving cream, oils and hair after each use. Sterilise electric razor heads weekly. Store open-air in a dry spot. Consider protective razor cases and cleaning solutions.

    Facial Cleansing Brushes

Sonic facial brushes speed up your cleansing routine and boost product absorption. But without regular upkeep, they transform into a hotbed of bacteria.

Facial brush heads should be replaced every 3-4 months. For the device handle, expect a lifespan of 1-2 years depending on use and care.

Routine cleaning is key for facial cleansing brushes. Disinfect head attachments weekly. Change brush heads sooner if you notice fraying bristles. Completely air dry after each use.

    Home Waxing Kits

Waxing at home saves time and money. But beware - old wax can cause inflammation and breakouts. The expiry date depends on the wax formula, but generally fall in the 1 to 2 year range.

If properly stored, wax can last 1-2 years unopened. Once opened, use within 6 months. Discard if wax texture seems off - dried out, gritty or separated.

Prolong your wax's shelf life by tightly sealing containers after each use. Store wax away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Never "double dip" with applicators. Keep your skin and tools disinfected.

By regularly replacing your beauty tools and knowing when to call time, you'll enjoy better results and protect your skin and hair health. Don't just inspect new purchases - take time to monitor your current collection. With some basic care, you can add months or even years onto your favourite beauty device.
